Playing drums is a rewarding experience |
It is believed that drumming releases the same ‘feel-good’ endorphins as your body after a physical workout, which will help you think clearer, and allow you to focus for longer periods of time during the day. Drumming can be therapeutic and of benefit to all. However, it has been specifically documented to help sufferers of cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, recovering addicts, people with learning difficulties, people with physical disabilities, older people, troubled adolescents and prisoners. The calming, focusing, and healing effects of drumming, serves as a distraction from pain and grief, help channel anger and express unresolved emotions. Study results demonstrate that drumming is a valuable treatment for stress, fatigue, anxiety, hypertension, asthma, chronic pain, arthritis, mental illness, migraines, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, paralysis, emotional disorders, and a wide range of physical disabilities. For the younger people out there, drumming helps to develop fundamental cognitive skills through channelling their mind, and focusing on one task. Drumming improves coordination, and generates general musical curiosity/enthusiasm. It teaches us how to keep time, count beats, understand rhythm and although you work up a definite sweat, no child thinks of it as exercise! Drums and other musical Playground Equipment like this isn't limited in purpose to any particular age, sex or ability of the child. |
Drumming and making music together in a group or ensemble is a unifying experience. Drumming in a group makes you concentrate on the timing, coordinate your hands, listen to other participants and hear the beat. Your contribution is rewarding, barriers are broken down and you’ll feel energised and motivated.
Drummers don’t have to worry about melody, or chords, instead they are in charge of rhythm. Virtually any child - or adult - can get some sense of achievement from drumming and best of all; it is enormous fun - for all ages!
